Description:

The American Goldfinch is a small, bright yellow songbird often seen bouncing through fields and backyard feeders. Known for their cheerful flight calls and acrobatic feeding style, goldfinches are frequent visitors to feeders that offer small seeds.

Nesting:

American Goldfinches build small cup shaped nests made from plant fibers and lined with soft materials like thistle down. They often nest later in summer when seed producing plants are abundant.

Identification:

Breeding males are bright yellow with black wings and a black cap. Females and non breeding males are more muted olive yellow with darker wings. Juveniles are brownish with subtle streaking before developing the adult coloration.

Song Description:

A lively series of musical notes often described as sweet and canary like. In flight they frequently give a cheerful “po ta to chip” call.

How to Attract:

• Offer sunflower seeds or sunflower hearts
• Use tube feeders with multiple perches
• Plant native seed producing flowers like coneflowers and sunflowers
• Provide fresh water in a shallow bird bath
• Leave seed heads on garden plants through fall and winter

Fun Fact:

American Goldfinches are one of the few North American birds that molt twice each year, changing from dull winter plumage to bright yellow breeding plumage in spring.

Year round resident across much of the United States, though northern populations may move south during winter.
