Description:

Bold, intelligent, and unmistakably blue, the Blue Jay is a large backyard visitor known for its loud calls and love of peanuts and sunflower seed.

Nesting:

Blue Jays build open cup shaped nests made from twigs, grass, bark strips, and sometimes mud. Nests are usually placed in the forks of trees or dense shrubs several feet above the ground.

Identification:

A large, bright blue bird with a prominent crest, black necklace across the throat, and bold white wing markings. Males and females look nearly identical, though males may be slightly larger. The tail and wings show striking black barring.

Song Description:

A loud and varied mix of calls including harsh “jay jay” cries, whistles, and surprisingly soft musical notes. Blue Jays are also excellent mimics and can imitate the calls of hawks.

How to Attract:

• Offer whole peanuts or sunflower seed
• Use a sturdy platform or hopper feeder
• Provide nearby trees for cover
• Expect them to carry food away to store

Fun Fact:

Blue Jays often store food for later by carrying seeds or peanuts away from feeders and hiding them in the ground or tree bark.
