Description:

The Chipping Sparrow is a small, friendly sparrow commonly found in yards, parks, and open woodlands. These birds often gather beneath feeders searching for seeds that have fallen to the ground.

Nesting:

Chipping Sparrows build small cup-shaped nests made of grasses and plant fibers, often placed in shrubs, small trees, or dense branches.

Identification:

Breeding adults have a bright rusty red cap, clean gray chest, and a thin black line through the eye. Nonbreeding birds and juveniles are browner with streaking and a less distinct cap.

Song Description:

A long, rapid series of dry trills that sound like a fast mechanical buzz.

How to Attract:

• Scatter seed on the ground or use platform feeders
• Offer millet or mixed seed blends
• Maintain shrubs and small trees for cover
• Provide fresh water in bird baths
