Description:

The Eastern Bluebird is a small, brightly colored thrush known for its vivid blue back and warm orange chest. These gentle birds are often seen perched on fence posts or wires scanning the ground for insects. They occasionally visit backyard feeders, especially where mealworms or fruit are offered.

Nesting:

Eastern Bluebirds nest in cavities and readily use nest boxes. They build tidy cup shaped nests using grasses and pine needles.

Identification:

Males have a bright blue back and head with a rich orange chest and white belly. Females show the same pattern but with softer gray blue tones. Juveniles are spotted on the chest before developing the adult colors.

Song Description:

A soft, musical warble often described as “cheer cheerful charmer.” Their gentle song is commonly heard in open fields and neighborhoods.

How to Attract:

• Offer mealworms in a tray or platform feeder
• Provide bluebird nest boxes in open grassy areas
• Maintain open lawns where they can hunt insects
• Plant native berry producing shrubs
• Provide fresh water in bird baths

Fun Fact:

Eastern Bluebirds were once in serious decline, but conservation efforts and widespread use of nest boxes helped their populations recover across much of their range.

Residency:

Year round resident throughout much of the eastern and southeastern United States, though northern populations may migrate south during winter.
