Description:

The House Sparrow is a small, stocky bird commonly found in cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Introduced to North America from Europe in the 1800s, these adaptable birds quickly spread across the continent and are now one of the most familiar birds around people.

Nesting:

House Sparrows nest in cavities and sheltered spaces such as building eaves, vents, street signs, and nest boxes. They build messy nests made from grasses, straw, feathers, and other materials.

Identification:

Males have a gray crown, black bib, chestnut neck, and brown streaked back. Females and juveniles are plain brown and gray with a pale eyebrow stripe. Their thick conical bill is well suited for eating seeds.

Song Description:

A series of short chirping notes often repeated rapidly. Their calls are simple and constant around nesting areas and feeders.

How to Attract:

• Offer mixed seed blends that contain millet or sunflower
• Use hopper or platform feeders
• Provide open feeding areas where flocks can gather
• Keep feeders clean to reduce disease spread

Year round resident across most of the United States, Canada, and much of the world. House Sparrows stay close to human settlements and do not migrate long distances.
