Description:

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a striking songbird known for its bold colors and beautiful, rich song. These birds visit backyard feeders during spring and summer, especially where sunflower seeds are available.

Nesting:

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks build loose cup-shaped nests made of twigs and grasses, usually placed in shrubs or small trees.

Identification:

Males are black and white with a vivid triangular rose-red patch on the chest. Females look very different, appearing brown with heavy streaking and a pale eyebrow stripe. Both have large, thick bills adapted for cracking seeds.

Song Description:

A rich, robin-like song made of clear, musical phrases that sound like a sweeter, more melodic version of an American Robin’s song.

How to Attract:

• Offer safflower seeds or sunflower hearts
• Use large hopper or platform feeders
• Maintain nearby trees and shrubs for cover
• Provide fresh water in bird baths

Fun Fact:

Male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks help incubate the eggs and will even sing while sitting on the nest.

Residency:

Summer resident across much of the northeastern and central United States and southern Canada. Rose-breasted Grosbeaks migrate south for winter.
