Description:

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the most common hummingbird in the eastern United States. These tiny, fast-moving birds are known for hovering at flowers and feeders while feeding on nectar.

Nesting:

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds build tiny cup-shaped nests made of plant fibers and spider silk, often placed on small branches. The nest can stretch as the chicks grow.

Identification:

Males have a bright iridescent red throat that flashes in the sunlight, along with a green back and white underside. Females lack the red throat and have a plain white throat with a green back. Both are very small with rapidly beating wings.

Song Description:

A series of high-pitched chips and squeaks. Their wings also create a soft humming sound during flight.

How to Attract:

• Use hummingbird feeders filled with sugar water
• Plant nectar-rich flowers like bee balm or trumpet vine
• Avoid using red dye in nectar
• Keep feeders clean and fresh

Fun Fact:

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can fly nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico during migration, traveling hundreds of miles without stopping.
